Interior Painting Cost in Northern Virginia

What it costs to paint a room, a floor or a whole home in Northern Virginia, by the room or by the square foot, and the five things that move the number. The same 2026 ranges our instant estimator uses, confirmed after a free on-site walkthrough.

What Drives the Price

By the Room or by the Square Foot

There are two honest ways to price interior work. By the room, each room type carries a range that reflects its wall area and the time it takes to cut in: a powder room is a few hours, a primary suite is a full day. By the square foot, walls only, two coats, at standard ceiling height, the rate is $2.50 – $5.00 per square foot of floor area, so painting every wall in a two-story home of about 2,200 sq ft comes to $5,500 – $11,000 before ceilings, trim and doors. Room pricing is more accurate for a home with a mix of spaces; square-foot pricing is simpler for an empty house or a whole-floor repaint. A typical three-room job — one small bedroom, one medium bedroom and one large room — prices at $4,250 – $4,900.

Ceiling Height

Taller walls mean more paint, more ladder time and more careful cutting at the ceiling line. The ranges assume eight- or nine-foot ceilings, which is what most Northern Virginia colonials and split-levels have. Ten-foot ceilings, common in newer Loudoun and Prince William subdivisions, put the wall base at 112% of the standard figure; vaulted rooms and two-story foyers, which need planks and extension poles, at 130%. We measure ceiling height room by room during the walkthrough rather than applying one number to the whole house.

Prep and Surface Condition

Nail holes, small dings, light sanding and spot priming are always included. Heavy prep — skim coating, many patches, peeling paint, or a dark or glossy color that needs extra work to cover — adds 15% – 35% to the wall base. Water damage and large holes are drywall repair, and walls under old wallpaper go through our wallpaper removal service first; each is quoted as its own line. We tell you which category your walls fall into during the walkthrough, and the quote lists prep separately so you can see exactly what it costs.

Ceilings, Trim, Doors and Windows

Ceilings add 20% – 25% of the wall base; baseboards and crown add 12% – 18%. Doors run $90 – $150 each for both sides and the frame, and window casings and sills $60 – $120 each. Trim is slower than walls because it is brushed in enamel and often sanded between coats, which is why it is priced separately rather than folded into the wall rate.

Paint Tier and Furniture

Ranges are shown at the Premium tier (SW Duration · BM Regal Select), our most popular. Standard (SW SuperPaint · BM Regal) prices at about 90% of these figures, Ultra (SW Emerald · BM Aura) at about 115%, and Labor Only — you supply the paint — at about 82%. Furniture matters too: empty rooms take 5% off the running total, while full-service moving and covering adds 10%. Light furniture that we can shift to the center of the room and cover is included at no change.

What the ranges include and what moves them.

How much does it cost to paint a bedroom in Northern Virginia?

A small bedroom or office (~100–120 sq ft) runs $950 – $1,100; a medium bedroom $1,100 – $1,300; a large room or primary bedroom $2,200 – $2,500. How much does it cost to paint the inside of a whole house?

For walls only, two coats, at standard ceiling height, figure $2.50 – $5.00 per square foot of floor area — $5,500 – $11,000 for a two-story home of about 2,200 sq ft. Ceilings add 20% – 25% and baseboards with crown 12% – 18% on top, and doors and windows are counted individually. Every range is confirmed after a free on-site walkthrough.

Is it cheaper to price by room or by square foot?

Neither is a discount; they are two ways of measuring the same work, and both land in the same place for a typical home. Room pricing suits a house with a mix of small and large spaces; square-foot pricing suits an empty home or a full floor. A room count without sizes cannot be priced honestly, which is why our estimator asks for room types.

How much do ceilings, trim and doors add?

Ceilings add 20% – 25% of the wall base and baseboards with crown add 12% – 18%. Doors are $90 – $150 each and windows $60 – $120 each. Every add-on appears as its own line in the written quote, so you can include or drop it.

What is the minimum for a small interior job?

Interior projects start at $600 – $750, which covers setup, floor and furniture protection, and cleanup on a single small room such as a powder room. A powder room itself runs $600 – $700 for walls. Every range is confirmed after a free on-site walkthrough.
