Our Process
What to Expect When You Work With Us
From the first call to the final walkthrough, here is how a Gold House Painting project runs — what we do at each step, and what we need from you.
Our Gold Standard Process, Step by Step
Five steps, the same on every job, from every office.
1. Consultation
We listen, learn about your goals, and provide a detailed quote.
It starts with a conversation, by phone or from the form on this site. Tell us what you want painted, what bothers you about the space and when you would like it done. Then we visit for a free on-site walkthrough: we measure, check walls, trim or siding for repairs, and talk through paint lines and finishes. Afterward you receive a written quote that lists every surface, the prep included, the products and the price. No pressure, no obligation.
What you do: Show us the spaces, share your goals and ask every question you have.
2. Color Guidance
Get expert advice on colors and finishes that fit your style.
Choosing color is the part most people put off, so we make it simple. We suggest palettes that suit your home's light, fixed finishes and style, drawing on the Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore collections, and we talk through sheen room by room — flat, eggshell, satin or semi-gloss. You can browse and save favorites on our colors page. If your HOA has an approved exterior palette, we work within it. Before the first coat goes on, every color name and code is confirmed with you in writing.
What you do: Pick your favorites — or tell us what you like and we will narrow it down.
3. Surface Preparation
We properly prep every surface for maximum durability.
Good prep is what makes paint last. Inside, we move and cover furniture, protect floors with drop cloths, fill nail holes and cracks, sand rough spots, caulk gaps and spot-prime repairs. Outside, we wash the house, scrape and sand loose paint, replace failed caulk, prime bare wood and mask windows, fixtures and plantings — the prep Northern Virginia's humid summers and freeze-thaw winters demand. Your quote lists each prep step, so you can see the work before the paint covers it.
What you do: Clear small items, wall hangings and valuables from the work area; we handle the rest.
4. Precision Painting
Our skilled team delivers flawless, professional results.
With prep done, the painting goes quickly and cleanly. Our crews cut in edges by hand, roll or spray for an even film, and apply two coats of the Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore product named in your quote. We work in a set order so rooms come back into use as soon as possible, and we tidy up at the end of every day: tools stored, floors swept, walkways clear. Your crew lead checks in with you each morning and lets you know what comes next.
What you do: Go about your day — we check in at the start and end of each one.
5. Final Walkthrough
We ensure you're 100% happy before we consider the job complete.
When the last coat is dry, we walk the job with you, room by room or all the way around the house. Bring your list. We look at every wall, edge and piece of trim in good light, touch up anything that is not right, and remove all of our tape, plastic and drop cloths. Furniture goes back where it was. We leave you with your written color list and the terms of our guarantee, and the job is not finished until you say it is.
What you do: Walk it with us, point out anything you would like touched up, and sign off when you are happy.
Questions About Working With Us
The things homeowners ask most before their first project.
How long does it take to get a quote?
We respond within one business day to set up your free walkthrough, and the written quote follows once we have measured and checked the surfaces. Most quotes go out shortly after the visit; larger homes and commercial projects can take a little longer because we price every surface and repair individually.
Do I need to be home while you paint?
Not for the painting itself. We like you there at the start of the first day to confirm colors and access, and at the end for the final walkthrough. In between, your crew lead keeps you updated by phone or text and follows whatever lock-up instructions you give us.
How do you protect my furniture and floors?
We move furniture to the center of the room or out of it and cover it with plastic, lay drop cloths over floors and carpets, and remove or mask outlet covers, fixtures and hardware. Outside, plantings, walkways and patio furniture are covered before any washing or scraping starts. Everything goes back where it was when we finish.
What does cleanup look like at the end of each day?
Tools and materials are stored in one agreed spot, ladders come down, floors are swept or vacuumed and walkways are cleared, so you can use your home that evening. Tape and masking stay up only where the next day's work continues. On the last day everything leaves with us, including empty cans and used plastic.
What happens if weather delays my exterior project?
We watch the forecast and do not paint in rain, right after it, or below the paint manufacturer's minimum temperature, because the finish would not cure. If a day is lost, your crew lead calls or texts the evening before, the schedule shifts and your price does not change. When we are also painting inside, we can usually switch to interior work that day.
